Who we are

John Saunders began his journey in pottery in 1976 at Juniata College in Huntington, Pennsylvania where he studied with Professor Jack Troy.  He served as the Ceramic Departments Shop Assistant for three years. His experience includes wheel throwing, hand building in stoneware, porcelain and earthenware.  Kiln firing experience includes gas, electric, salt glaze, raku and wood firing in the first Anagama kiln in Pennsylvania.

His love of teaching wheel throwing began at Juniata College where helping other students master techniques proved very rewarding.  John now offers group and individual classes in the studio that introduce new students to clay and help experienced students refine their skills.

John currently produces work with Saunders Mountain Pottery. His studio is located in Stroudsburg Pennsylvania, where he provides lessons for beginners through advanced pottery/ceramic enthusiasts. His work is sold through Saunders Mountain Pottery website, Pocono State Craft Festival, Artisans on Ann St. and various other events.

He is a member of the National Council on Education in the Ceramic Arts and is a member of the Pocono Arts Council. John also organizes Monroe and Northampton County Potters to host an Empty Bowls Events each year that support local Soup Kitchens that help fight hunger in our Pocono community.
